Groddle Field Notes · Restoration report
How much of Glitch is back?
Glitch closed in December 2012. Tiny Speck released its art, music and server code into the public domain, and almost everything else was lost: the maps of private quest rooms, most of the sound library, the multiplayer world itself. Groddle Afternoon is a fresh web build that puts the pieces back together, rule by rule from the original code, room by room from players’ recordings where nothing else survives, and with a new multiplayer server so players can share Ur again.

Walk a street
A simplified Hechey Track, drawn with the game’s own sprites. Click anything you’d find on a street in Ur to see what’s been restored behind it.
Every system, checked off
The whole game, system by system. This list lives in the code and is rebuilt with every session, so it ticks over as things land.
The world
Streets, hubs and the physics of getting around Ur. 16 of 16 back.
Creatures & trees
Piggies, chickens, butterflies, trants and the things that roam. 9 of 9 back, 3 in multiplayer.

Gardens, mining, cooking, machines: the crafting economy. 8 of 8 back, 3 in multiplayer.
Giants & economy
Quoins, currants, vendors, shrines and imagination. 10 of 10 back, 3 in multiplayer.

By the numbers
Counted straight from the repository: nothing here is typed in by hand.
195 of 245 quests playable, 22 of 22 quest rooms rebuilt, 1,422 original streets, and more, counted from the repository.
Where the 445 original quests stand
Quest rooms, rebuilt
Many of Glitch’s best quests happened in private rooms built just for you. Only a handful survive in the archive, so most are reconstructed from the quest’s code (its timers, flags, dialogue and rewards) and recordings players and Tiny Speck’s own level designer left behind. Pick a room to read its story.
22 of 22 quest rooms rebuilt, each with its story.
Play the designers’ levels
Two of Tiny Speck’s own level designers recorded the levels they built: Ian Passmore in 2015, and Lisa Trac as LT_IndieGameDev in 2012. Tiny Speck never released these levels’ layouts, so each one here is rebuilt from the quest code, Tiny Speck’s art and those recordings. Open the rebuild and the recording side by side.
Every Play link on this page opens a practice copy in its own tab: it starts fresh and never touches your saved game.
24 levels from 2 designers, with their recordings.
Rebuilt from words alone
No recording of these is known, so they come from the upgrade cards, item text and players’ forum posts.
3 levels rebuilt from words alone.
Seasons and holidays
Glitch kept three holidays on the calendar, and the remake brings each one round on its real dates. Zilloween also comes round on Ur’s own Dametime calendar, for about two real days in every fifty-one, so it turns up between the real ones too. The Egg Hunt has no dates: its chocolate eggs drop from Egg Plants all year. A card marked On now is running today.
Each Try it in solo link opens a fresh practice copy with that season on and what it needs in your pack, or for the Egg Hunt, beside an Egg Plant. Like every Play link here, it never touches your saved game.

Zilloween
October 17 to November 1, and Remember 25-37 on the Dametime calendar. Ur’s calendar next reaches Remember 25 in about 35 days.
Jack-O-Lanterns glow on every street. Carve pumpkins with a Pick and a Knife & Board, light them with a full Firefly Jar, eat candy for a Sugar Rush, and give candy away.
- Carve
Carve a Pumpkin with a Pick and a Knife & Board for 15 energy. Each one comes out with one of five faces, plus 5 Roasted Pepitas and a Clump of Jellisac.
- Light
Light a carved pumpkin with a full Firefly Jar (7 fireflies), place it at home and teach it phrases to say. Carved pumpkins rot when Zilloween ends.
- Candy
The Jack-O-Lanterns on the streets answer Trick or treat once a game day. Candy gives a Sugar Rush, 11 a game day at most (the last one brings toothache), or give it to Piggies, Chickens, Butterflies and Street Spirits.
- Grow
Pumpkin Seeds only grow during Zilloween.

Glitchmas
December 12 to January 3.
Snow over Ur and candy canes by the signposts. The Toy Vendor stocks Glitchmas Crackers and Cards, Egg Nog is back, and somebody wants you to say "yay".
- Shop
The Toy Vendor sells Glitchmas Crackers (550 currants) and Glitchmas Cards (220 currants). Pull a cracker with a nearby critter’s help for a joke or a fun fact; sign a card and mail it.
- Quest
A Holiday Thing: All you have to do is type "yay" into local chat and you will get a gift. The present holds a Collectors' Edition 2010 Glitchmas Yeti.
- Nog
Nog an Egg once a game day for 11 iMG. From December 24 the Glitchmas Yeti mails you a cracker.
Badges
And one secret badge, which shows itself once you earn it.
Its items, verbs, words and badges come from Tiny Speck’s server code.

Pi Day
March 14, wherever it is still March 14.
Anyone with a Frying Pan can cook Pi today, and a Pi in your pack can Estimate Pi for favor with Tii.
- Cook
Cook Pi in a Frying Pan from 14 Flour, 7 Butterfly Butter, 3 Old(er) Spice and 22 Tiite. The recipe only works on Pi Day.
- Estimate
With a Pi in your pack, Estimate Pi once a game day. Each digit you get is favor with Tii the first time each year, and mood after that.
Its items, verbs, words and badges come from Tiny Speck’s server code.

Egg Hunt
All year.
Pet an Egg Plant and now and then a chocolate egg drops. Collect all five kinds and the Egg Hunter Trophy takes them in exchange.
- Pet
Pet an Egg Plant once a game day for a 10% chance of a chocolate egg, rising to 15%, 20% and 30% with Light Green Thumb I, II and III. Without the skill only 60% of pettings take. Each of the five eggs is as likely, and they drop all year.
- Trophy
Collect all five and the Egg Hunter Trophy takes one of each in exchange.
Badges

What can’t come back, and how the rest was made
Gone for good
Solo play adapts what needed other players where it works (races against rival Glitches, Feats with companions, street projects with a hired hand). Multiplayer brings back the shared street: chat, parties, races, trading and Rook fights. What neither can bring back is listed here.

- Its rules, numbers and words come straight from the original server code Tiny Speck released.

- A multiplayer system reworked so one player can enjoy it: rival Glitches, companions, a hired hand.
- In progress

- Not yet
- Recoverable, but not started.
